Volunteer Opportunity for Wildlife Lovers

Poster with a hand holding a megaphone and the words "We need you! Volunteers required" beside the Burntisland Hedgehog Haven logo.

As the nights grow cooler and our prickly little residents begin to settle in for the season, we’re reaching out to ask for a few more helping hands.

We are currently looking for dedicated volunteers who can commit to one regular morning a week to help care for the hedgehogs in our centre. If you love wildlife, aren’t afraid of a bit of muck, and have a big heart for small creatures, this could be just the opportunity for you.

What the Role Involves

Every single day, our hedgehogs need:

  • Fresh food and water

  • Daily weighing

  • Cage and hutch cleaning

  • Medication (if required)

  • Records updated for each hog in our care

This is hands-on, sometimes dirty, and often physically demanding work — but it is also incredibly rewarding. Watching a poorly hedgehog recover and eventually return to the wild is something you never forget.

Volunteer Requirements

Here’s what we’re looking for:

You must be able to commit to one regular morning a week (preferably the same day each week)
Shift time: 9:30am to 12:00pm
You must be aged 18 or over
No straw allergies, as you’ll be working around it daily
You’ll be on your feet the entire time, with lots of bending and stretching – please note this role isn’t suitable for anyone with back problems
Be prepared to stay a little longer some days to make sure all the hogs are properly cared for
Full training will be given, including how to handle hedgehogs safely and compassionately

A Bit More About the Work

Let’s be honest. It can be messy. Some of the hedgehogs come in very poorly or with injuries, which can be hard to see at first. But the transformation they make thanks to your care is truly special. This is not a glamorous job – but it’s an important one.

If you’re someone who doesn’t mind getting your hands dirty, loves animals, and is happy to work hard for a great cause, we would love to hear from you.

How to Apply

If this sounds like something you can genuinely commit to, please email us at:
burntislandhedgehoghaven@gmail.com

Tell us a little about yourself, any experience you have with animals (not essential), and which day of the week you’d be able to volunteer. Please don’t worry if you don’t hear back immediately — we’re a small team doing our best, but rest assured we will respond as soon as we can.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for considering joining our mission to help our local hedgehogs.

With gratitude,
Sharon and Andy
