Where it all started
Our hedgehog rescue journey began in the summer of 2022, when we found a hedgehog that needed help at the roadside in Kirkcaldy. We took it home and called the only hedgehog rescue in the area, but they were unable to take it.
We realised the hedgehog had fly strike, so it was a race against time to get it the help it needed. The SSPCA were busy, so our only option was to drive the 50-mile round trip to the Fishcross wildlife centre.
A couple of weeks later we found another hedgehog and faced the same situation, so again we made the trip. Sadly, we later heard that both hedgehogs had passed away.
Knowing that many people wouldn’t be able to make that kind of journey, we began learning everything we could about wild hedgehogs.
In the autumn of 2022 we learned that Sandy Boyd, a dedicated hedgehog carer from Wormit in Fife, had made the difficult decision to retire after more than 20 years because of ill health. Sandy generously donated his cages and equipment to us, which gave us a solid foundation to start our own rescue.
A spare room, then a garage
At first we worked from a spare room upstairs. It wasn’t ideal, but it let us begin caring for sick and injured hedgehogs. It quickly became clear that the space wasn’t big enough for the number of hedgehogs that needed us.
So we moved the rescue into our converted garage, which had been a playroom for our children and later a storage room. Work began just before Christmas, and within two weeks the space had been transformed into a hedgehog hospital, giving us room to care for many more hedgehogs.
Our first patient, Adam, arrived in March 2023.
The two hedgehogs we tried to help may have passed away, but we have saved countless lives since because of what they inspired.
