Open hole in Burntisland is a danger to hedgehogs

Uncovered water-filled hole at the roadside on Cowdenbeath Road, Burntisland

Open holes like the one left uncovered by Scottish Water on Cowdenbeath Road here in Burntisland are a death trap for hedgehogs. If a hedgehog fell in, it wouldn't be able to get out. Worse still, the hole is full of water, so the hedgehog would drown.

We are trying to get companies to make sure that, when they are carrying out works like this, holes are covered over at night.

The hole is likely to be left all weekend, so we are very grateful to Eliza Twaddle for Burntisland, Kinghorn and Western Kirkcaldy, who came to our aid this evening by providing some wood that could be used as a ramp in the hole. Thank you so much too to our volunteer Pat, who dashed along on a Friday evening to make sure the ramp would be suitable and safe for hedgehogs.

We will be checking the hole over the weekend.
