Every year, thousands of hedgehogs are killed on Scotland’s roads.
For many people, finding a hedgehog lying at the roadside has become a sadly familiar sight. These much-loved native mammals are already facing significant challenges from habitat loss, garden fragmentation, and declining populations. Road traffic is now one of the biggest threats they face.
That is why we have launched a petition calling on the Scottish Government to approve and introduce Small Animal Warning Signs in areas where hedgehog road deaths are particularly high.
These Signs Already Exist in England
In 2024, England approved the use of dedicated Small Animal Warning Signs. These signs can be installed in locations where local authorities identify a significant risk to wildlife, helping to alert motorists and encourage greater awareness.
Despite this, Scotland has not approved the signs for use.
Transport Scotland has indicated that there are currently no plans to introduce them north of the border.
We believe that needs to change.
Why These Signs Matter
No single measure will solve the challenges facing hedgehogs, but raising driver awareness can make a real difference.
When motorists are alerted to the presence of wildlife crossing points, they are more likely to:
- Be aware of their surroundings
- Reduce speed where appropriate
- Take extra care during dawn, dusk and night-time hours
- Watch for animals crossing the road
In areas where hedgehog casualties are regularly recorded, even a small reduction in road deaths could save countless animals each year.
A Simple Change That Could Save Lives
This petition is not asking for every road in Scotland to be covered in signs.
We are calling for local authorities to have the option to install Small Animal Warning Signs in identified hotspot areas where hedgehog fatalities are known to occur.
It is a practical, targeted and cost-effective measure that would demonstrate Scotland’s commitment to protecting one of our most iconic native species.
